MISSION

Canadian Friends of AKIM helps AKIM Israel. AKIM is an acronym for the Hebrew words which, translated, means "Association for the Habilitation of the Mentally Handicapped in Israel." AKIM, founded over 54 years ago, is the largest organization in Israel caring for mentally handicapped, Down Syndrome and developmentally disabled children and adults. Over 34,000 mentally handicapped and 135,000 members of their families benefit from these services. AKIM cares for all Israelis, including Christians and Moslems in need of AKIM services. By agreement with Canadian Friends Of AKIM, AKIM Israel utilizes its equipment, facilities, services, and personnel on behalf, when and in the manner requested by Canadian Friends Of AKIM.

WHAT WE DO

Canadian Friends Of AKIM – Israel Association For The Mentally Handicapped receives funds, cooperates with, and makes grants and donations on an international basis to organizations and institutions, registered charities or qualified donees under the Income Tax Act (Canada), whose objects are similar: to help them integrate handicapped children into society to the extent of their capabilities and to help them develop any skills which they have with a view to providing a livelihood. The qualified international organizations help Canadian Friends Of AKIM carry out its objectives.

Through the creation, development and participation in events throughout Canada, the members of Canadian Friends of AKIM help bring awareness to the Canadian public of the vital role that AKIM plays in keeping the hope alive for the tens of thousands of mentally handicapped living in Israel.

AKIM PROJECTS turn vision into reality. They reach out a helping hand to people with mental disabilities and significantly improve their quality of life through specific, tailor-made programs, developed as a response to priorities approved every year by the AKIM Israel National board of Trustees.  They include, but are not limited to:

Early Intervention - When an at-risk infant is identified in the hospital or at home, AKIM's professionals assess the child's needs and offers support to the family.

Nurseries and Kindergartens - AKIM's professional staff of trained teachers and speech therapists help each child gain maximum independence.

Family Support - AKIM's children are provided with essential services from childhood through adulthood.

Summer Camps - Camp during the summer school vacation for 2,000 mentally handicapped children and young adults, with a two-fold purpose of providing fun and entertainment for intellectually disabled ones and a week-long respite for the families of these ones.
